Gynecomastia can occur at any age. One or both breasts may be affected. If it is seen in babies or children, it can be completely normal. It will go away on its own over time. Later, the appearance of enlarged male breasts is more persistent. If you have noticed enlarged breasts for several years, it is unlikely that they will decrease on their own.
Enlarged breasts are most often the result of hormonal changes, but these can be additionally related to taking drugs or medicines and diseases. There are also genetic causes and gynecomastia, which is the result of excess body weight.
Hormonal gynecomastia is caused by an imbalance between estrogen (typically a female hormone) and testosterone (typically a male hormone) in men's bodies. Both hormones are present in the male body, but there must be much more testosterone than estrogen for the body to function properly. If the balance is disrupted, it can lead to problems with erections, voice changes and – enlarged breasts, among other things!
This imbalance can be caused by a variety of factors, including spontaneous hormonal changes during puberty or aging. Hormone balance can also be disrupted by:
- the use of certain medicines (eg anabolic steroids, drugs for cancer, AIDS, ADHD and antidepressants),
- drug use (e.g. marijuana),
- the presence of certain diseases (e.g. liver, kidney or hormonal disorders).
In addition, some men may be genetically predisposed to excessive accumulation of fat in this area. The same is the case with excess body weight - the chest area is one of the main places where extra pounds accumulate. In very rare cases, breast enlargement in men can be caused by tumors or cancer.
Breast reduction surgery is suitable for all men from the end of puberty who face dissatisfaction or psychological problems due to gynecomastia.
The first step to a transformation is always a consultation with a surgeon in our clinic. The doctor gets to know you, examines you and listens to your problems. During the consultation, he confirms whether you are a suitable candidate for surgery and presents the result after the procedure.
You can also talk to your doctor if you are not sure whether surgical correction of gynecomastia or some other method is more suitable for you.
Since aesthetic corrections are becoming less taboo, gynecomastia surgery is a common procedure. It is the most reliable method of male breast reduction and is similar in some aspects to female breast reduction. Surgery can give you a body you can be proud of.
At the consultation, we usually advise you to undergo a couple of tests before the gynecomastia surgery to assess your general health and rule out any risks or contraindications for the procedure. In this way, we will be able to better predict the final result, and you will avoid possible disappointment after the procedure. Tests that patients may have include:
- Blood tests: We check the levels of hormones in the blood, including estrogen and testosterone. We can also check general blood values such as hemoglobin.
- Breast ultrasound: A breast ultrasound can be performed to more accurately assess the size, structure and composition of breast tissue. This can help in determining the extent of the intervention and planning the surgical approach. We find out whether it will be necessary to remove only fatty tissue or overgrown glands.
- Mammography: Mammography is an X-ray examination used in medicine to examine breast tissue and detect possible abnormalities, including breast cancer. In very rare cases, this can also be the reason for male breast enlargement (even unilateral). However, gynecomastia is not always associated with breast cancer, so a mammogram is not necessary unless there is a serious suspicion.
We assess what exactly you will do before the operation for each patient individually.
We know two versions of enlarged breasts, and according to them, the surgical intervention is also divided.
In the first case, male breasts can be enlarged only due to the accumulation of fat (also known as LIPOMASTIA/PSEUDOGYNECOMASTIA), but we do not feel the enlarged glands. In the second case, the breasts are enlarged due to oversized glands and also accumulated fat and excess skin. Correction of gynecomastia, where only fat is present (lipomastia or pseudogynecomastia) - Liposuction:
- The procedure is performed under local anesthesia - you are awake, but you do not feel it.
- The surgeon first makes small incisions (a few mm) around the nipples.
- A special tube (cannula) is inserted through the incisions.
- We break the fat cells into smaller pieces with the cannula.
- Then, by creating a vacuum, we suck out the excess fat.
- Sometimes liposuction is combined with the excision of the loose skin that remains after the fat has been removed.
- Cover the wounds with bandages.
Correction of gynecomastia, where enlarged glands and excess fat are present - CLASSIC TECHNIQUE:
- The procedure is performed under general anesthesia - you are asleep and do not feel it.
- It lasts up to about 90 minutes.
- The surgeon first makes a cut (incision), most often along the lower part of the nipple ring. We make sure that the cut is minimally visible after healing.
- Then we cut out the excess glandular tissue. It does not affect the normal functioning of the body or other key physiological functions.
- If necessary, excess fat tissue is removed with liposuction.
- Finally, we cut off the excess skin that remained after the removal of glandular and fatty tissue.
- The incision is sutured and covered with bandages.
With gynecomastia surgery, we will achieve a more attractive appearance of male breasts, which can mean the beginning of a freer, more self-confident life for you.
Recovery from gynecomastia surgery takes up to 14 days. After the procedure, the wound is covered with bandages, and the chest is wrapped with a bandage. In the case of liposuction, a compression garment is also fitted, which supports the breast during healing and reduces swelling. After the procedure, we will give you detailed instructions on wound care and agree on the first control visit.
In the first days after the operation, you will feel discomfort or pain in the chest area. Painkillers may be prescribed to relieve pain. We will be available for you on a special phone number.
We recommend absence from work for about two weeks. We also advise avoiding physical activity for at least that long. We advise you to avoid chest exercises for a little longer. Following the doctor's instructions will allow the best results of the operation and proper healing of the wounds.
The result of the correction will be visible soon after the procedure. In a few months, the scars will fade and the last swelling will subside. Then it will be difficult for other people to recognize that you have undergone breast augmentation surgery. The chest area will look firm and nicely defined.
As with any surgical procedure, certain side effects and rare complications may occur. Among the more common side effects after gynecomastia surgery are swelling, bruising, pain or breast tenderness. These side effects usually go away within a few weeks after the procedure and are normal.
Rare complications include infection, bleeding, breast asymmetry, changes in breast sensation, or scarring. It is important that you follow our instructions and do not overexert yourself during your recovery. If you have any concerns during your recovery, you can contact us for help.
The price of gynecomastia correction depends on the specifics of each individual and is determined at the end of the consultation.
