A large group of patients after pregnancy and birth seek the help of plastic surgery due to child-birth consequences. These patients are seeking to restore the body to its previous state and are taking care of their physical activity and diet. They manage to reduce their body weight to their pre-pregnancy weight, but in certain parts of the body the fat persists and it does not respond to diet and physical activity. This fat must be corrected by liposuction (see liposuction).
A similar problem also happens in breasts after child-birth because they wither and become loose. Such breasts cannot be fixed without the aid of plastic surgery. This is surgery to lift the loose breast (if there is enough glandular tissue) by cutting and tightening the skin and thus making a new skin bra.
The duration of the effect of the surgery depends on the quality (elasticity) of the skin and breast tissue. An unavoidable result are scars around the nipple, vertically down from the nipple to the fold under the breast and sometimes a scar in the crease of the breast. The visibility of the scar depends on the patient’s wound healing. The scar is red for a few months to one year; after one year it becomes brighter and looks more like the colour of the skin.
In case there is enough glandular tissue, breasts of appropriate size can be formed only if we lift them. When a patient has too little of her own tissue, simultaneously with the lift of the breast, a breast implant of adequate size needs to be inserted.
The results of the procedure are permanent in the case of breast reduction. An exception may arise if there is a significant increase in body weight or, in the case of pregnancy, if the breasts lose a significant volume.
The aging of the body is a dynamic process, so the breasts also change over the years. The good news is that despite the physical changes, the result is permanent in most cases. You can also contribute to long-lasting results with a healthy diet and lifestyle and a stable weight.
Liposuction is sometimes mentioned in connection with this procedure, but let's say that liposuction or fat suction is not a suitable technique for effective and safe breast reduction.
Reduction mammaplasty is a term used to describe the surgical removal of breast tissue, which may include the removal of excess fat, skin and/or glandular tissue.
Mastopexy, on the other hand, is a breast lift and is often performed in parallel with breast reduction, which sags due to weight. However, it can be performed as an independent procedure. The surgery involves removing excess skin around the nipple and the lower part of the breast to correct sagging.
Breast reduction is performed with a surgical intervention under general anesthesia, where excess fat-glandular tissue and sagging skin are removed and in this way the breasts are reduced to the desired size. During this procedure, we also reduce the nipple and raise the breasts to make them aesthetically perfect.
IMPORTANT: In all forms of reduction, the breast is also lifted, which means that the drooping lower part is removed and the nipples are moved higher.
We will examine your general and surgical anamnesis (your previous diseases or interventions), review the list of possible medications and obtain a picture of your lifestyle habits. In this way, we can rule out possible later complications and carry out the procedure safely. Before the procedure, we recommend.
At the consultation, you will discuss your expectations and details regarding the course of the procedure and recovery with the surgeon. He will mark the incision sites on your chest to illustrate the location of the scars. He will also be available for all questions and doubts, so that you can discuss the procedure calmly and without hesitation.
- Eating easily digestible food and plenty of fluids
- Taking vitamin C, which promotes wound healing
- Stopping taking anti-inflammatory drugs that affect blood clotting
- Smokers are advised to stop smoking or reduce to a maximum of four cigarettes a day at least two weeks before the procedure
The operation is performed under general anesthesia. It is a completely safe and relatively simple procedure. Depending on the complexity and amount of tissue that needs to be removed, it takes from an hour to an hour and a half.
Before the procedure, you will discuss your medical condition and any previous experience with general anesthesia with the specialist anesthesiologist. In case of bad experiences (vomiting, dizziness), he will prescribe you appropriate medication and be careful when waking up so that this kind of bad experience does not happen again.
There are two forms of implants used, a round one and one in the form of a drop (anatomical). The most important advantage of a drop-like implant is that it enables the formation of a breast of a more natural look. However, in practice we establish that the end result is not that different from one with a round implant which is why we often choose the round implants. Round implants are connected with fewer complications because in the case of possible implant rotation, the breast does not change its form. In the insertion under the muscle, we usually achieve a natural form with a round prosthesis. Insertion under the gland usually needs a drop-like prosthesis.
