Vaginoplasty is a term that covers a wide range of surgical procedures for aesthetic changes to the female genitalia, including internal and external appearances. The most common of these is the narrowing of the vagina, which often becomes loose due to natural aging or the consequences of childbirth.
As some women age, they suffer from genetically weak connective tissue in the vaginal wall, which can cause excessive laxity. In more difficult births, the newborn may stretch when leaving the vagina or even require an episiotomy, where wounds are prevented even before birth. Sometimes larger incisions are also required which do not return to their pre-birth state after recovery, causing the vagina to become visibly deformed and loose.
The term is also used for the aesthetic repair of damaged vagina after illness or severe injury.
In addition, the term vaginoplasty is also used for gender confirmation surgery where a biological male changes his genitalia to female. This procedure is different from a simple vaginal narrowing and will not be discussed below, although it is also performed at our institution.
And generally, suitable candidates for vaginoplasty include all women who feel they have too wide a vaginal opening. As long as it does not bother the woman, no special interventions are necessary.
If you notice:
- that you no longer feel the same satisfaction during sexual relations;
- that sexual relations become painful due to unusual growths or scarring;
- that the tampon or menstrual cup does not stay in place after insertion and does not offer you sufficient protection during menstruation;
then you can consider vaginoplasty. Often women opt for a vaginal narrowing procedure, for whom we believe that a non-surgical procedure such as laser rejuvenation of a loose vagina would be insufficiently effective. Sometimes women also come to us who have already undergone laser vaginal rejuvenation elsewhere, but are not satisfied with the results.
We are aware that vaginal problems are not only of a physical nature. Women who experience the feeling of an enlarged vagina often also experience psychological consequences, such as loss of self-confidence, avoidance of intimacy and wearing swimwear, anxiety or even depression. That's why holistic health is key for us. With our interventions and professional care, we strive to help patients achieve greater satisfaction, self-confidence and a better quality of life in all areas - both physical and psychological.
Regardless of the type of intervention, we always first conduct a non-binding consultation with the client. On it, we get to know each other, perform an inspection and listen to your wishes. During the consultation, we can best assess whether you are a suitable candidate for vaginoplasty or whether we might recommend a different procedure.
You should prepare for vaginoplasty in the same way as for any other surgical procedure. If we satisfy all your expectations at the consultation, we agree on the date of the operation. We will call you the day before and tell you the exact time.
Before the operation you must undergo basic diagnostic tests. We also give you instructions on how to stop smoking before surgery and how to stop or change certain medications (individually).
You must fast for at least 6 hours before anesthesia.
For your comfort, vaginoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. This means that you sleep during the vaginal narrowing operation and do not feel it.
The operation narrowing of the vagina begins with the marking of areas of excess skin or tissues that you would like to remove. The tissue that remains and the walls of the vagina are fixed with special stitches. This narrows and tightens the vaginal canal. When the surgeon has properly tightened the vaginal canal, the skin on the mucous membrane is sutured. When tightening the vagina, we make sure that the results look as natural as possible. In addition, we do not overdo it - we want to tighten the vagina to the point that it feels comfortable for you again, but we do not go to the opposite extreme, so that your vagina becomes too narrow.
The recovery period after vaginoplasty can vary from person to person, but usually lasts a few weeks. It is important that you carefully follow all care instructions and regularly attend check-ups.
In the first 2-3 weeks after surgery, we recommend that you avoid intense physical activities. It is also recommended not to spend a lot of time in a sitting position and to avoid bathing in water. Instead, a quick shower or washing of the external genital area with a damp cloth is recommended. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for at least 4 weeks.
In addition, your daily lifestyle may need to be adjusted until you regain full functionality. This includes adjusting the way you sit, lift objects, and avoid certain types of physical activity.
The price of vaginoplasty depends on the specifics of each individual and is determined at the end of the consultation.
