Botulinum toxin (Dysport, Vistabel and other preparations) is used on different parts of the face and works by causing temporary paralysis of the muscles into which it is injected. This makes wrinkles smaller and less pronounced. It can also be used in the armpits, feet or palms to reduce sweating. It is applied with a thin needle with multiple barbs in the desired area. The effect usually occurs within four days and is maximal after two weeks. The durability of the result is four to six months.
Every procedure carries certain risks. It is important that you understand and accept the potential risks and complications associated with them. Although most patients do not experience side effects, it is crucial that you carefully discuss the risks, potential complications, limitations, and consequences of using botulinum toxin preparations.
Bleeding may occur after the injection which usually appears as a bruise and is limited. In very rare cases, bleeding requires additional procedures, including surgery. In order to reduce the possibility of such complications, it is important to warn the doctor about possible blood clotting disorders, and 14 days before the procedure, stop taking preparations that affect blood clotting, such as Aspirin, vitamin E, ginkgo preparations and others. If you are taking coumarins (Marivarin, Sintrom and others), switch to alternative treatment according to the doctor's instructions.
After the application of botulinum toxin, a small and usually imperceptible swelling may appear, as well as the places where the pricks are normally visible. Both phenomena disappear within a few days. Headaches may occur in the first days after botulinum toxin application, which usually disappear within two weeks. On the first application of botulinum toxin, there may be a feeling of excessive 'tightness' of the skin, which usually disappears within two weeks. The skin at the application sites may become red, which also usually resolves within a few days.
Our body is anatomical and asymmetrical in appearance, so complete symmetry after botulinum toxin application is sometimes not possible. Asymmetry can also occur due to a different reaction of the body on one side. Correction of asymmetry may require additional botulinum toxin injections or other procedures.
