In the hands of an experienced surgeon, liposuction is a safe procedure with minimal invasiveness and a short recovery time. Combined with proper nutrition and regular exercise, you can achieve long-lasting results and improve your health and self-confidence.
In our clinic, we have restored the smile of thousands of patients who could not get rid of fat even with a healthy diet or regular activity. This most often accumulates on the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, neck, chin and upper arms.
It is no wonder that liposuction is the second most popular procedure in cosmetic surgery, right after breast surgery. In the following, you will learn why liposuction is so popular, how it works, which form to choose and why it is not a substitute for weight loss, but only for aesthetic body shaping after you have already lost most of the fat.
It is most difficult to lose fat on the abdomen, back, hips, thighs, arms, upper arms and chin, which is why we perform the most procedures on these areas.
With intervention in the abdominal area, it is quite easy to restore the appearance of a slim and defined abdomen. We create a more feminine and attractive outline of the whole body on the hips and buttocks, successfully define the thighs and restore tone to the arms, legs or shoulders. We also successfully remove lipomas (benign fatty tumors).
ATTENTION! We first refer overweight people to other forms of weight loss and only when they are very close to their ideal weight, back to us.
Are you one of those people who just can't and can't lose the annoying fat in the lower abdomen? Does looking at your hips make you feel like you're wearing breeches?
You are not the only one. Over the years, fat often begins to accumulate on the hips and between the abdominal muscles and the skin. Stubborn plaques in this place are also often left by pregnancy.
This fat is easily removed surgically, but you will have to take care of the fat that is stored deep under the abdominal wall (visceral fat) yourself. This fat is not visible, but will decrease as the overall body fat decreases. The abdomen and hips are shaped with small cannulas (hollow needles), which are inserted through incisions in the skin, and with the help of a liposuction tube, excess fat is removed from the subcutaneous area.
Since it is a fairly large area, the procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia. In some cases, we also perform contouring (reshaping) of the body for a more beautiful and rounded appearance.
Do you exercise regularly and run a lot, but still can't get rid of fat on your thighs?
Liposuction of the thighs visibly improves the appearance of the legs and completely eliminates the problem of unpleasant rubbing of the skin between the thighs. With the procedure, we achieve a more pronounced contour and a smaller circumference of the thighs, as well as a more harmonious general symmetry of the body. At the same time, we often correct the area of the knees. The procedure is mostly performed under general anesthesia, and for less extensive corrections, such as liposuction of the knees, only under local anesthesia.
Do you feel like you've lost your elegant chin and neck line? As we enter our mature years, this phenomenon is very common. A young face has no fat in the chin and neck area. This is mainly accumulated in the cheekbones. Over the years, however, fat begins to accumulate on the lower part of the face, which appears as a chin that continues into the neck.
Chin liposuction restores a youthful appearance to the face. It is a very common procedure, as many individuals in their mature years or after successful weight loss are faced with residual fatty tissue in the chin area. The shape is corrected with a cannula, which is inserted through a small incision in the skin and then the unwanted fat tissue is removed with movements. We mostly use local anesthesia.
With liposuction, we restore the shape that you had in your early youth or that you simply always wanted. In addition, individuals like to opt for this type of procedure because the results are long-term. The removed fat will not return to the same place, of course, provided that you do not abandon good dietary habits and regular physical activity.
If you have already reached your target weight and eat a healthy diet, but you still have excess fat in certain parts of your body, you are the right candidate for this procedure. How do you know that? A fairly simple criterion is that your BMI (body mass index) is not higher than 35. How do you calculate it? Divide the height in centimeters by the weight in kilograms to get the result.
Also, in some cases, we cannot operate on a patient who has any of the chronic diseases, such as diabetes, blood coagulation disease and cardiovascular diseases. In this case, an additional examination will be required, where we will judge whether we can operate on you.
In general, the review will include:
- History - A discussion about your daily diet, lifestyle, medical history and goals for liposuction.
- Physical examination - During the examination, we perform a comprehensive examination of your body, where we assess the amount and areas where excess fat accumulates and determine which parts of the body we will correct.
- Laboratory tests - With laboratory tests to check your general health and determine whether we can safely perform the procedure.
The procedure usually removes up to 4.5 liters of fat, as larger amounts can pose a danger to your general health.
The course of the operation is as follows:
- Depending on the extent, it is performed under general or local anesthesia.
- Immediately before the procedure, we inject a liquid that is a mixture of physiological solution, adrenaline and local anesthetic lidocaine into the areas intended for liposuction, which facilitates the suction of fat and reduces bleeding and pain after the operation.
- We wait 20 to 30 minutes and start the process.
- A liposuction tube (cannula) is inserted through a small incision in the skin and the excess fat is removed with movements under the skin.
- The tube can be used either for breaking up fat mechanically (ultrasound liposuction, Vaser liposuction) or for breaking up fat using a laser (laser liposuction).
- The fat broken into smaller particles is then removed from the body using a vacuum (cavitation liposuction).
- After the procedure, a compression garment or bandages are applied to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling.
KEEP IN MIND: In order for the swelling to disappear as quickly as possible, you will need to wear a special garment after the procedure that will put pressure on the treated area. There may be some swelling or pain for the first few days, but this will pass quickly. You will be prescribed analgesics to relieve the pain, and after a few weeks the skin will gradually adapt to the new body shape and the result will already be visible.
There are several different types that differ in the technique and method of fat removal. At the Fabjan Clinic, we most often perform classic liposuction, as it is the safest method that offers lasting results, and recovery is quick and undemanding. In addition, we also carry out:
- Laser liposuction (SmartLipo) – in combination with a cannula, this method uses a laser that precisely breaks up the fat and closes the veins, thus greatly reducing the appearance of swelling and bruising after the procedure. The advantage of the SmartLipo technique over other techniques is that it smoothes and tightens the skin, so it does not leave behind the loose and excess skin that other techniques can leave behind. It is a suitable method for both large and small areas of fat deposits.
- Ultrasonic VASER liposuction - this method is assisted by ultrasound, which liquefies the fat and then sucks it out of the body.
- Vibration or PAL liposuction - in this method, we use a special device that vibrates to lubricate the breakdown of fat cells, which are then removed by aspiration.
On average, two to five kilograms of fatty tissue are removed. The amount of fat removed depends on the size of the area being treated, the amount of total fat and your body type and metabolism.
The maximum amount of fat that can be safely removed is usually limited to five to six kilograms, but in no case more than 20 kilograms, as we can risk serious complications such as fluid imbalance, organ damage or blood clots.
The procedure is performed under different types of anesthesia, and the choice depends mainly on the complexity of the procedure.
When it comes to minor procedures such as removing fat from one small region (knees, small area on the abdomen, etc.), we decide on local anesthesia. Local anesthesia takes place by numbing the area where the procedure is performed with an injection into the skin, so that you do not feel any pain.
In deep sedation, we mostly perform interventions on patients who, due to their health condition (cardiovascular diseases, chronic illnesses), are not suitable for intervention under general anesthesia. In such cases, we usually first consult with a specialist. to an anesthesiologist who, based on the patient's pharmacotherapy and medical history, determines which type of anesthesia would be most appropriate. Sedation is done through an intravenous injection, which puts the patient in a state where he does not feel pain, but can hear and answer the doctor's questions.
For extensive and complex interventions, such as the removal of large amounts of fat from the body, we opt for general anesthesia, which puts the patient to sleep so that he does not feel pain. Which type of anesthesia will be suitable for you will be assessed by the doctor and the procedure performed in cooperation with the anesthesiologist.
After the procedure, you may feel pain, which depends on the extent of the procedure and the form of anesthesia. The level of pain could be described as mild to moderate, it is expected to be very short-lived, and it is further alleviated by the use of analgesics. It usually occurs immediately after the procedure and can last from a few days to a few weeks. In classic liposuction, pain usually occurs in the first 24 hours after the procedure and then gradually decreases. In some cases, the pain may be greater if you do not follow the doctor's instructions, so we advise you to follow the instructions carefully to avoid unnecessary pain.
The recovery time depends on the area and extent of the intervention. Immediately after the operation, the surgeon puts on a compression garment or an elastic bandage, which prevents the formation of swelling and the accumulation of serous fluid and helps shape the body to the desired figure.
The pain and discomfort after the operation will disappear within a few days, and you will also be given analgesics to relieve the pain. In the first few days after the operation, there may be swelling and redness at the site of the operation, but it will decrease and disappear after a few weeks. The doctor may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent possible infection. You will be able to return to your daily activities within a few weeks after surgery.
The results are usually long-lasting. The fat cells that are removed during the procedure do not grow back, but the remaining fat cells can still increase if you regain weight. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and regular physical activity is important to maintain results.
How permanent the results will be depends mainly on your lifestyle habits. If you maintain a healthy lifestyle, the results can be lifelong, otherwise the fat pads will begin to accumulate again.
The result of liposuction is permanent under the following conditions:
- do not gain more than 5 kg,
- do not take hormonal preparations,
- there are no hormonal changes present (thyroid diseases, gynecological problems that change the hormonal status, pregnancy, breastfeeding)
Liposuction is considered a safe and routine procedure, but like any surgical procedure, it is associated with certain possible complications and risks. Among the most common risks are:
- Pain – You may experience pain after the procedure, which is usually mild to moderate and is relieved by the use of analgesics.
- Swelling – Swelling may occur in the area of the procedure, which can last from a few days to a few weeks.
- Bleeding – Any bleeding is usually mild and stops quickly. In very rare cases, bleeding may occur, requiring additional treatment.
- Infection – Any surgical or non-surgical procedure can cause infection. This happens very rarely, but can cause complications that require additional treatment.
- Burns - The energy of the devices used in liposuction (vaser, laser) can cause burns to the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Such a burn can lead to slower healing, scarring and tissue damage, which may require additional treatments and a worse outcome of the intervention.
- Reactions to anesthesia - As we could read above, the operation is performed under different types of anesthesia, such as local, sedation or general. Reactions to anesthesia are rare but may include allergic reactions, drowsiness, headache, nausea and vomiting.
In our clinic, we have been performing Vaser liposuction for more than 10 years; ever since its beginnings, when the American company Assisted Lipoplasty Systems developed an ultrasound probe for breaking down fat tissue, and it became an attractive alternative to classic liposuction. It allows for a gentler approach and good results. Vaser liposuction is based on the use of ultrasound energy. It is most often chosen for corrections in the area of the abdomen, thighs, hips, face, neck and buttocks.
This type of technique is not suitable for all candidates, so a thorough preliminary examination by a surgeon is mandatory. It works by first emulsifying or liquefying the fat cells and then removing them from the body by aspiration. Compared to traditional classic liposuction, Vaser liposuction enables more gentle and precise fat removal, as liquefied fat is easier to remove and does not cause trauma to surrounding tissues, such as connective tissue and vessels. Since it is a less demanding procedure, recovery is faster, but the pain is slightly more pronounced compared to classic liposuction.
It is performed under local and general anesthesia, depending on the volume. It takes place by placing an ultrasound probe in the subcutaneous tissue, which uses its energy to liquefy the fat, and the dissolved fat is then sucked out of the body. Puncture wounds are sutured and bandages applied.
You will need a few days to recover, but you can usually return to your daily activities within a few weeks. Also, the results will only be visible after a few weeks or months, as the skin and tissues need time to adapt.
Liposuction in combination with lipofilling (transfer/injection of one's own fat to another place) is becoming more and more popular. The procedure is performed simultaneously: the removed fat is transferred to another part of the body with special preparation.
The injected own fat is called fat grafts. Own adipose tissue (autologous fat) is increasingly used to correct volume deficits in various parts of the body, such as: face (facial rejuvenation with own fat), breasts (breast augmentation with own fat) and buttocks (BBL with own fat). It is also used for the correction of congenital dents, indented scars, deformities after surgery or injuries, for covering visible parts of implants (breasts) and in other places of the body for its shaping. Smaller procedures are performed under local anesthesia, and more extensive ones under general anesthesia.
Interest in lipofilling is greatest among women who would undergo liposuction in combination with breast augmentation or transformation.
It is performed in combination with classic liposuction, in which the removed fatty tissue is then processed accordingly (centrifugation for smaller volumes, rinsing for larger volumes). We obtain adipose tissue, which in a thick liquid form is suitable for injection. It is injected into the target site using a syringe or pump, via a needle or cannula. After the procedure, there is swelling and bruising at the injection sites. They disappear on the face in seven to fourteen days, on the body they can last longer, up to a month.
The final result is visible after three to six months, when part of the injected fat breaks down and is absorbed. Immediately after the procedure, hypercorrection (impression of an excessive amount of fat injection) may be present. Part of the fat cells always perish during the intervention. The remaining fat remains for several years or even permanently. The proportion of fat that is retained depends on many factors: the technique of removal and application, the metabolic state of the body, the area of the body of application, age, smoking, expected results. In most cases, about 50% of the injected fat is retained; however, greater deviations may be present. To achieve the final result, several repetitions of the procedure are occasionally necessary due to fat absorption.
The price of liposuction depends on the specifics of each individual and is determined at the end of the consultation.
